This year WASO will be hosting Symphony in the City on the evening of the 16th December. My wife and I used to go every year….until the kids came. We couldn’t make last year and we can’t make it this year again. Damn kids!

But for those who like classical music, I highly recommend this FREE event. Every year it ends with a literal ‘bang’ with a full recital of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture (though they use fireworks instead of cannons). They also play a lot of well-loved favourites, this year including arguably the most famous aria ever written, Puccini’s Nessun Dorma from his opera Turandot.

If you go, get there nice and early so you can get a front & centre seat on the grass right in front of the orchestra. Bring a blanket. We would arrive at around 3-4pm and make an afternoon of it and bring a picnic lunch etc. I think it starts at 8pm, but there’s usually around 10 to 15 thousand people, so yeah, get there early if you want a good spot.
